The subgenus Anachyris of genus Paspalum includes six species, ranging from Mexico in North America to Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. The subgenus is mainly defined by having a boat-shaped, concavo-convex spikelet, the upper lemma with the abaxial surface furrowed, having prominent longitudinal ridges. Anatomycally, the species of the subgenus Anachyris are characterized as Kranz, of the MS (=XyMS-) type. Relationships of the subgenus with other taxa of Paspalum are discused and a key to the species, as well as an anatomical description of the subgenus, photomicrographs, morphological description of the species, and distribution maps are presented.
