Resumen
The study area of Quebrada de los Corrales ( El Infiernillo Tucumán) where archaeological research began in 2005, is located at 3000 masl in the northern section of the Aconquija mountain system. The main objective of this chapter is to present the current state of research so as to contribute to the general knowledge of pre-Hispanic societies of northwestern Argentina (NWA). The study area offers a long record of human occupation from ca. 7400 to 650 years B.P., rendering ideal as a case study to address the issue of the late Holocene transition. This was a time when groups moved from hunting-gathering lifestyles to producing their own food, finally establishing themselves in villages as their economy turned to farming-herding practices towards the beginnings of the Christian era.
