In a pre-bank economy of the Ancient Regime, like the Buenos Aires one during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, notaries were not only legal intermediaries but also financial intermediaries. An intermediation supported by their ability to access information more efficiently than the parties in a credit agreement. The notary's office was therefore an informational device, which enabled to counterbalance the asymmetrical information, providing connections between potential creditors and borrowers without the conditioning of a pre-existing interpersonal link. This article offers a succinct panoramic reading of this mechanism, drawing on notarial sources and on the relational dimension of credit practices in Buenos Aires throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, in order to provide a summary characterization of their intermediation.
