This paper intends to carry out a theoretical and analytical reflection on the concept of “violence” from an anthropological point of view. The complexity of said term and its wide-ranging applications require a theoretical approach that covers its differing definitions, stressing both the strengths and weaknesses of each perspective. This variability brings into sharp relief the analytical pitfall simplied by a definition. Comparison among concepts, however, will permit us todraw the boundaries of a field of analysis as well as list some basic traits any minimally rigorous concept of “violence” ought to meet. In doing this, we strive to overcome those proposals that, on the grounds of the difficulties involved inits definition, argue for the futility of the endeavor.
