In the mid–60s, following a period characterized by free atonalism and dodecaphonic writing, Gerardo Gandini’s music incorporated post–serial compositional principles and techniques. This aesthetic update coincides with the years of his position as professor at the Latin American Center for Advanced Musical Studies of the Di Tella Institute, trips and study stays made in the USA and Italy, as well as his participation in international festivals in Europe and America. These exchanges allowed him first–hand contact with the most recent debates and artistic and theoretical production of the national and international contemporary scene. Aleatory composition, graphic notation, speech and phonetic composition, musical theatre and improvisation were the orientations to which Gandini was particularly receptive, with different depth and scope. These orientations are naturally combined in many of his works. They also merge with expressions corresponding to an intertextual poetics that would extend to his latest compositions. The article characterizes the interrelation between some of these aesthetic orientations in works or pieces such as Mutantes I for chamber ensemble (1966), ...L’adieu for piano, percussion and ensemble (1966–67), Lamento di Tristan. Ceremonia fúnebre para Erik Satie for piano(s) and ensemble (1975) and «Laberinto» for guitar and string quartet (1977–78). The procedures adopted in these works are related to the composer’s writings that document his own interpretation of the musical field in that historical period.
