The Naupa Huen Formation is a continental sedimentary unit distributed across the north patagonian foreland, traditionally assigned to the Late Oligocene–Early Miocene based on its fossil content and stratigraphic relationships. This assignment has led to its correlation with continental synorogenic volcaniclastic deposits associated with the tectono-stratigraphic cycle that shaped the Patagonian Broken Foreland (PBF) during the Andean contractional regime, which began in the Early Miocene (Burdigalian) and continued into the Middle Miocene. However, the stratigraphic and sedimentological characteristics of the Naupa Huen Formation, along with its predominantly epiclastic composition, contrast with the synorogenic depositional features and volcaniclastic nature of other units preserved in the Neogene depocenters of the PBF. To better understand the tectono-stratigraphic context of the Naupa Huen Formation, a combined stratigraphic and geochronological analysis was performed using U-Pb (LA-ICP-MS) dating of detrital zircons. The results constrain the age of the Naupa Huen Formation to the early Eocene (Lutetian) – Early Miocene (Aquitanian), with a possible extension into the early Paleocene. This suggests that its deposition corresponds to a tectono-stratigraphic cycle that predates the configuration of the PBF during the Early (Burdigalian) to Middle Miocene contractional regime, as previously proposed. While the findings presented here allow for potential stratigraphic correlations with various Paleogene units in the north patagonian foreland, further studies are needed to refine our understanding of Cenozoic sedimentation in this region.
