The article constitutes an exploratory and comparative analysis of Programa RAÍCES (Argentina) and Programa de Repatriaciones del CONACyT (CONACyT’s Repatriation Program) (Mexico). Through documentary analysis based on institutional normative documents as well as available data from both countries, the intention is to reflect on the reasons that these countries have for the repatriation of researchers to their countries of origin. The programs show an interest in repatriating “early career researchers”, a profile that has barely been studied in Mexico and Argentina. The study contributes to progress in the construction of a diagnosis of the current state of the programs but, above all, to a reflection on the significance of repatriations in defining a national policy for science and technology.
