It is a well known fact that in Hispano‐American Spanish the temporal meaning of ‘future’ is expressed in oral varieties by means of the periphrase ir a +infinitive (voy a estudiar), while morphological future (estudiaré) has mainly a (modal) value of possibility or conjecture. On the contrary, the multiple modal meanings that the periphrase ir a +infinitive can adopt in Spanish varieties have almost not been studied. This paper proposes, precisely, to systematize the different modal values that the periphrase ir a +infinitive can show in Argentina, as much deontic (warning, threatening, ironic reprobation) as epistemic (surprise by an unexpected fact, emphatic negation or affirmation). This systematization pretends to contribute to the grammatical description of Argentinian varieties, analyzing the multiple meanings and pragmatic uses that verbal forms (and specifically the periphrase ir a +infinitive, that implies a process of auxiliarization) can have.
