This paper aims to examine the concepts recently developed by contemporary political theory in order to think citizen forms of representation. First, it expounds the arguments that support the need for conceiving the democratic political representation as no restricted to the electoral and formal device. Second, it examines the relevance of the conceptualization of citizen forms of representation, in the light of current experiences, generally conceived as participatory, and which are denominated here “self citizen representation” and “institutions of citizen representation”. The hypothesis defended in this paper affirms that both forms of representation are legitimated in the figure of a ‘common man’ separated from professional politicians, and that they could be considered democratic to the extent that they respond to the egalitarian principle. Citizen representatives represent experiences rather than territories or social groups. Finally, the paper concludes by identifying the contributions and open challenges to the elaboration of a theory of citizen representation.
