In the context of the Scottish Enlightenment, the paper analyses the contributions of Adam Ferguson's social philosophy to think about the coexistence of the concepts of community and civil society in the modern commercial society's diagnosis. Three fundamental dimensions are considered: the natural origin of society, her spontaneous order and the benevolence as a social bond. Therefore, the paper analyses the paradoxical dimension of civil society in Ferguson's thoughts and the important role of virtue as an active mediation between private and public space.
