Road memories. Rethinking movements and firmness. Our paper deals with the historical and contextual senses that movements and firmness of peoples –and their identities– achieve in processes of indigenous alterities formation. We tackle the relationships between mapuches and national and provincial states in the Argentine Patagonia, comparing the ways of identifying, classifying and distributing the mapuche persons in space in the provinces of Chubut and Neuquén: the first one through the uses of past and history, while cartographies and mapping are central to the second one. We will analyze the provincial frames, and pay attention to the provincial styles of constructing hegemonies, which embed certain manners of fixing/stopping or moving/circulating that establish the permitted limits for indigenous claims and requirements.
