R-carvone is a terpenic ketone naturally occurring in essential oils from several local plants, like mint and “burrito”, with antimicrobial, insecticidal and repellent properties. In this work, the incorporation of this active compound in commercial PET films using supercritical carbon dioxide impregnation is studied, with potential applications as bioactive material for food protection. The effect of two process variables (CO2 density: 245–713 kg·m-3 and temperature: 35 and 60°C) on the amount of loaded carvone and its release kinetics into air is analyzed. Results suggest that the positive effect observed for both variables on the loading yield is related mainly to the glass transition temperature depression of the polymer induced by the absorption of CO2, which favors the polymer chain mobility and the penetration of solute molecules. Moreover, a reduction of the R-carvone diffusion coefficient in the polymer is observed, consistent with a CO2-induced partial recrystallization of PET.
