| dc.description.abstract | It has been suggested that one of the catalysts for the formation of the groundbreaking Teatro Abierto movement was the statement made by the director of the Teatro Municipal General San Martín (TMGSM), Kive Staiff, when presenting the 1981 season, in which he allegedly claimed that the exclusion of contemporary Argentine playwrights was due to their «non-existence». Meticulous archival research allows me to state that no such statement was recorded in the mainstream media; nevertheless, the rumour took on the force of fact. I shall analyse its significance and performative power by reconstructing the position occupied by Staiff and the TMGSM during those years, based on the director’s public statements around 1981, to understand why he appears as the perfect antagonist for the emergence of this movement. Returning to the origins of Teatro Abierto is an exercise that goes beyond reconstructing the genealogy of this singular event: it involves shedding light on the complexity of the tensions that ran through the theatrical field of the time. | es |
