With the objective to assess the feasibility of integrating cover crops (CC) into agricultural systems in the southwestern Buenos Aires region, various CC species were evaluated over a four-year period. The species used were rye (R), oats (O), vetch (V), their associations (R+V and O+V), and a control (fallow) without CC. Dry matter production (DM), consumptive water use (CWU), water use efficiency (WUE), and water cost (WC) were evaluated. The average DM across all CC treatments was 3683 kg ha-1, notably exceeding 4400 kg ha-1 for both R and R+V. The average WUE was 21 kg DM ha-1 mm-1, with R notably excelling at 27 kg DM ha-1 mm-1. However, this varied considerably, ranging from 10 to 50 kg DM ha-1 mm-1 depending on the year. Oat and consociations (O+V and R+V) had a WUE ranging between 20 and 25 kg DM ha-1 mm-1, whereas V exhibited an average WUE of 10 kg DM ha-1 mm-1, significantly lower than the rest of the CC in most years. The average WC of including CC was 42 mm compared to control, with a maximum of 71 mm and a minimum of 13 mm. Taking into account the information generated in this study, in years with precipitation below historical averages, the inclusion of CC in the southwestern Buenos Aires region is a practice that would allow intensifying production systems by increasing carbon and soil cover inputs without posing a risk to subsequent crops. Additionally, long fallow periods showed an efficiency ranging from 6 to 42%, highlighting the inefficiency of this practice in retaining water during winter.
