Punica granatum L., “pomegranate”, “granada”, is a tropical fruit that is consumed both fresh and processed and its peel in infusions. The objective of this work is to define the micrographic characters of diagnostic value that will make it possible to carry out the botanical quality control of food and pharmacobotanical products derived from this fruit, incorporating added value. The micrographic techniques of scraping, hard dissociation, observation with polarized light and histochemical reactions to characterize lipids, crystals and aleurone were applied. The diagnostic elements were represented by solitary and grouped isodiametric sclereids, druses and cubic crystals, simple starch grains of various shapes which constitute complementary reference in the absence of thermic treatment on the raw material; and columnar sclereids, lipid drops and aleurone grains belonging to the seeds. These are essential characters to verify the genuine nature of products derived from pomegranate.
