The first stage of MERCOSUR' life was characterized by the implementation of a free trade area through a tariff reduction program that led to an increase in trade mainly between Argentina and Brazil. This article analyzes the perspective of the UIAArgentine Industrial Union, the main association of industrialists, regarding the effects of the integration process. As they did with the monetary convertibility program applied at that time, the Argentine industrialists supported the process overall and only negotiated specific situations derived from it. Doubts and uncertainties around MERCOSUR were balanced by the dream of being able to export to the south american giant, Brazil.
