The present essay deals with two important issues deemed relevant to contemporary international adjudication. Its legitimacy, on the one hand, and the multifuctionality of international courts and tribunals, on the other, in an attempt to determine whether these concepts are related. First, the current state of international adjudication is described in order to argue, then, that the state consent-based system is not the only source of legitimacy of interstate courts. By focusing the analysis on interstate courts, it is held here that these courts, through their decisions, act as public authority and exercise a variety of functions, beyond solving bilateral disputes. This allows them to legitimate themselves before several actors of the international arena. Therefore, they increase their capacity to deal adequately with the 21st century scenarios.
