Metal matrix coatings (Fe-base) with WC-9Co cemented carbide reinforcements were deposited on boron steel substrates using an inductive hardening treatment. Some specimens were subjected to a post-deposition mechanical treatment (TM) consisting of shot peening with steel beads. Microstructural observations confirm excellent adhesion of the coating to the base steel and the development of dendritic grains composed mainly of Fe and W. The WC-9Co grains were partially dissolved in the metal matrix, which was attributed to the heat supplied during the consolidation process and the presence of Cr in the metal matrix. Abrasive wear and Vickers microhardness data of the specimens with and without mechanical shot peening treatment were compared. The shot peened sample presents greater resistance to abrasive wear and higher microhardness than the coating without mechanical treatment. An average microhardness 56% higher than the unshot peened sample is determined. It is noted that the lower Weibull modulus recorded in the samples with TM is indicative that shot peening produces an increase in the variability of microhardness data.
