This work seeks to understand how Policía Federal Argentina teaches its officials the duty to pay homage to policemen who have lost their lives, bonding individuals who share the same profession but are not linked by affection and helping them to configure an institutional us. In order to analyze these questions, I will draw on the contributions of Louis Vincent Thomas (1993) who distinguishes between two ways of experiencing death: first-person death, of close beings, whose departures directly affect the biographies of people, and the death in the third person, of strangers, who nevertheless cease to impact and outraged those who are affected by it. From observing institutional ceremonies, conducting interviews with cadets and instructors of Commissioner General Juan A. Pirker’s Cadet School I will analyze practices and representations associated with the death of police officers. In particular, I will show how through certain mechanisms the institution teaches its officials that the profession is risky, that death is a possibility and that its fallen ones must be constantly honoured. In short, how through these mechanisms -that focus on dead police officers and death- an institutional us is configured.
