Maize is a key crop for both global food security and the economy. In this context, the implementation of strategies that improve nutrient use efficiency and promote sustainable agricultural practices is a priority. One such strategy involves the combined application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and chemical fertilizers. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of inoculation with Azospirillum argentinense Az39, in combination with chemical fertilizers, on maize yield. To this end, field trials were conducted over several consecutive growing seasons at two experimental sites belonging to the Faculty of Agronomy of the National University of Río Cuarto, in the southern part of Córdoba Province, Argentina. The experimental design was completely randomized and included treatments with chemical fertilizers (Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) and MicroEssentials® SZ® (MESZ)) applied to the soil, along with seed inoculation treatments using zinc oxide and Az39 in various combinations, as well as an untreated control. The results showed yield increases in all treatments compared to the control. In particular, the combination of MESZ with Az39 achieved a significantly higher average yield of 8006 kg ha⁻¹, compared to 5764 kg ha⁻¹ for the control. These findings indicate that integrating PGPR with chemical fertilization enhances crop productivity, optimizes phosphorus use efficiency, and represents a valuable tool for advancing toward more sustainable and resource-efficient agriculture.
