Agricultural production in the Pampas has experienced a strong process of economic concentration in the last 25 years. This process is largely explained by the differences between stakeholders in the area magnitude that they operate. As a result of these differences, some may achieve economies of scale that enable them to compete with better chances in the land rental market. Moreover, there are conditioning factors that have contributed to this development. The main ones can be divided into those that derive from technological change and those that are based on public policy. The State, whether by action or omission, plays a key role in this process. This article intends to account for the weight of the rural property tax, an item usually absent in the economic studies that address the issue. We will proceed by building data series (1999-2014) for the Pampas provinces (Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Entre Rios and Santa Fe), and then discuss their evolution (including the comparison between them) and use them as input to assess their impact on the income of different types of “farms”. This section also reflects on the extent to which the tax is effectively charged with the progressiveness established in the legislation.
