This article presents the way that Foucault ad-dressed the issue of the State in his own genealogicalresearch. It reconstructs the way in which the State iscircumvented from the study of disciplinary power, be-ing, nevertheless, indicated as a possible principle ofarticulation for multiple and dispersed power relations. It points out the introduction of a new scale for the ana-lyzing power: the population, which leads to investiga-tion about the relations between biopolitics andgovernmentality. From this viewpoint, it raises ques-tions about the problem of the reception ofFoucaultean studies in the Italian biopolitical traditionandgovernmentalitystudies, toask aboutthepossibili-ties of reception from the current Latin American stateof affairs
