Te Stoics place progress among the soul’s preferred indiferents; that is, progress would have an instrumental value with reference to the scope of a virtuous life. However, the Stoa doesn’t admit the existence of an intermediate disposition between vice and virtue, denying, in this way, that the category of προκόπτοντες or profciens has a moral value itself. In efect, it’s somewhat contradictory to claim that, on the one hand, those who make progress are, as non-wise, defnitely vicious; and, on the other hand, that progress would be useful for the profciens’ purpose. Bearing the appointed difculty in mind, and intending to refne such contradiction, our propose is: i) to notice the ethical and gnoseological values which characterize the mental disposition of the profciens, with the aim of ii) evaluating in what sense progress would be an advance, in terms of a series of possible psychological changes, concerning the conquest of virtue
