This study aims to explore the relationship between using different kinds of letters for teaching to read and to write and initial reading writing learning. Previous cognitive studies have found a casual relationship between the acquisition of lower level skills such as handwriting and perceptual learning, and initial writing and reading learning. The study assessed 74 first grade children at the end of the school year in word reading, word writing and story writing. Four groups of children participated in the study. Two of these groups learnd to read and write usig only uppercase letters, the other two groups used cursive to write and lowercase letter to read. The comparison didn’t provide empirical evidence to support the teaching of reading and writing with only one type of letter in first grade.
