This article analyzes the novel Exploración X. El orfanato del Dr. Rindón (2022) by Pablo Avedaño (Magnus Mefisto) as a paradigmatic case of otaku writings in contemporary Argentina. From a perspective that brings together studies on Children’s and Young Adult Literature (CYAL), mainstream culture, transmediality, and intermediality, the paper examines the work along three axes: literature written by youtubers, its inscription within the field of CYAL, and its dialogue with mass culture – particularly manganime and survival horror video games–. To this end, it draws on concepts from intermediality studies, reception theory, children’s and young adult literature, and fandom studies. The central hypothesis argues that the novel, shaped by the dynamics of the mainstream publishing industry and the author’s digital fandom, strategically exploits the youth otaku and gamer niche, integrating a Japanese imaginary that both coexists with and enters into tension with Western narrative traditions and imaginaries.
