The article takes the example of the Sabines to display ethnographic criteria that define the work of Virgil, Aeneid mainly, given its prestigious status in Roman society of the late first century BC This reputation, however, this does not imply that the Sabines Virgil as a completely positive ideal or ethnicity, but uses ethnographic ambiguity of positive and negative criteria and points of agreement and disagreement with Rome. At this, the paper aims to show that the Sabines in Aeneid occupy a position not very significant in the process of building the reputation of the future Rome, making evident a difference with the position of the Sabines in the works of authors as Varro or Propertius.
