Changes that have occurred over the past two decades regarding young people's news consumption habits—such as the importance of smartphones as the preferred interface, the dominance of social media as a gateway to information, and the consumption of news alongside leisure and entertainment activities—call for a reflection on the academic training of journalists and social communicators. This article aims to explore contributions of university education on the development of critical thinking among first- and second-year Journalism and Social Communication of public and private universities in Argentina. To achieve this, data were analyzed from fourteen mixed-gender focus groups (four conducted in private universities and ten in public universities), each consisting of six to eight participants. The analysis of the findings indicates that, during the early years of their studies, students engage in activities such as debates and reading specialized literature, combined with communicationrelated practices like fact-checking sources and analyzing disinformation strategies. These activities enable them to develop a critical perspective on the processes of information production, circulation, and consumption in the media. Furthermore, students expressed an awareness of the construction of this critical perspective and identified a growing sense of responsibility regarding the role of journalists and social communicators.
