The purpose of this article is to examine the challenges facing secondary schools, linked from their origin to modern mandates and formats, for their expansion into rural contexts within the framework of an increasing fragmentation of the educational system. The proposed analysis is based on the schooling experience of a young woman from the Puna region of Argentina. The research approach adopted is qualitative, and the perspective is ethnography. The results show that in the case of the study, schooling faces challenges and possibilities related to providing full knowledge for rural communities in the region, distancing itself from the purposes of an ordinary secondary school, but at the same time, access to education and the assets provided by the school represent the door to other rights, not only for the student but also for their family
