As a heritage of the Greco-Roman Antiquity in the Iberian Peninsula of Alfonso X, the animal world is the kingdom of wildness and "strangeness": it is populated by "bestias fieras saluaies", "bestias fieras estrannas", "bestias saluajes". A descriptive approach predominates in this zoology. It emphasizes not only the danger of animals for human beings, but also the spectacle of nature in a perpetual struggle between species. However, at the same time it shows the convergence of several perspectives: it begins with a description of some animals and their strange customs (based on respect for the authority of the ancients), continues with an allegorical interpretation (based mainly on the authority of the Church) and concludes with an outline of "scientific" classification (based on direct observation of nature). Nature itself is not constituted as a separate domain, independent from the supernatural order, bur as a set of signs, symbols and allegories of eternal truths. The stories contained in The Miracles of Guadalupe offer evidence of this "coexistence" of the natural and the supernatural orders and of everyday reality and eternal truths, evidence that is embodied in the descriptions of the animals that appear in these narrations.
