This article analyzes the film La virgen roja (Paula Ortiz, 2024), a cinematic work that fictionalizes the historical case of the filicide of Hildegart Rodríguez at the hands of her mother Aurora Rodríguez Carballeira in 1933. Through a systematic review of existing academic studies, the article examines the theoretical and methodological frameworks employed in research on the film, with particular attention to cultural mythocriticism and its application to film analysis. The main mythological references present in the film are identified and analyzed —Pygmalion, Medea, Demeter and Persephone, and Pyramus and Thisbe— as well as the symbols and archetypes that structure its mise-en-scène, among which the red lily stands out. The article also examines the film’s inscription within the biographical film tradition and reviews the tensions between the historical dimension and the psychological dramatization of the mother-daughter relationship. The conclusions discuss the critical and popular reception of the film and propose a reading of the discourse of contemporary motherhood through an affective and political lens, questioning the limits of the essentialization of negative motherhood in recent audiovisual fiction.
