In the Province of Spain since 1535 the mandates of the superior authorities of the Order of Preachers were applied which provided for the collection of information for the composition of a general history of the Dominicans. This resulted in the redaction of the first chronicles in Spanish, written by Castilian friars (Olmeda, Cruz and Castillo), who not only narrated the origins and development of the different convents but also offered a hagiographic synthesis of a moralizing nature. All the chronicles dedicated extensive chapters to the subject of the reform of the Order. To perpetuate the new observant identity, the lives of saints canonized in the 15th century were chronicled, in particular, that of Catherine of Siena, the mother and model of the observant reform. This article examines the space that is granted to this hagiography in the chronicle of Fray Hernando del Castillo, the context of the author’s writing, the aspects that stand out the most in his writing, with the interpolations, glosses and explanations that Fray Hernando added to emphasize the issues of importance to the Order at the time.
