El Padre Las Casas, De Bry y la representación de las masacres americanas

Abstract

El trabajo estudia las imágenes con las que Théodore de Bry ilustró una traducción de la Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias de fray Bartolomé de las Casas, editada en Frankfurt en 1598, un corpus visual en el que concurren las fórmulas del martirio, de la caza y del infierno para representar masacres. Se trata de analizar las relaciones entre esas metáforas, sus posibles vínculos con representaciones de las guerras de religión en Francia y con martirologios protestantes. Finalmente, se muestran las implicancias de aquel libro de 1598 para la recepción de la obra del padre Las Casas en la Europa protestante.The work studies the images with which Théodore de Bry illustrated a translation of the Very Brief Account of the Destruction of The Indies of Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, edited at Frankfurt in 1598, a corpus visual in which the formulas of the martyrdom, hunting and hell to represent massacres. It is about analyzing the relationships between these metaphors, their possible links to depictions of wars of religion in France and with martyrdoms protestants. Finally, it shows the implications of that 1598 book for the reception of the work of father Las Casas in Protestant Europe.
