Lipopeptides (LPs) are compounds produced mainly by bacteria of the genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas, and are characterized by their high antimicrobial activity. In this study, Bacillus velezensis RC218 was incubated in two different LP production media (“Gu” and “MOLP” media), and the ability of these LPs to inhibit mycelial growth, macroconid germination, and reduction of mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) in Fusarium graminearum strains was evaluated. Radial growth was determined every 24 hours, the percentage of ungerminated macroconidia was quantified by optical microscopy, and the damage caused to germ tubes was analyzed. Irradiated wheat grains were incubated with F. graminearum and LPs for 28 days, after which DON extraction and quantification were performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). LPs produced in the “MOLP” medium significantly inhibited the growth of two F. graminearum strains, whereas those obtained in the “Gu” medium only inhibited strain CPE 1314. LPs from the “MOLP” medium inhibited the germination of macroconidia of strain CPE 1314, and alterations in the structure of conidia and germ tubes were also observed in all strains treated with LPs from both media, with those obtained from the “MOLP” medium producing the most alterations. The LPs produced by B. velezensis RC218 in the “MOLP” medium were generally the most effective in inhibiting the growth and germination of F. graminearum macroconidia. On irradiated grains, the LPs produced managed to reduce DON production in two of the three F. graminearum strains evaluated in at least one production medium. The use of these LPs can be a sustainable alternative for the control of this phytopathogen in cereals.
