The Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Group (G3M) of the Instituto de Física La Plata has decades of experience in the design, synthesis, and characterization of magnetic nanomaterials for technological, biomedical, and environmental applications. Building upon this expertise, several production routes have been developed— including mechanosynthesis, coprecipitation with specific functionalizations, thermal decomposition, and solvothermal methods— capable of generating nanoparticles and hierarchical nanostructures with controlled size, crystallinity, assembly, and surface chemistry. This review details these synthesis procedures and the strategies employed to optimize the colloidal stability, functionalization, and magnetostructural behavior of the resulting systems. Furthermore, it provides a summary of the applications investigated by the G3M in recent years, encompassing environmental remediation, selective separation of biomolecules, cell and drug targeting, magnetofection, magnetomechanical actuation, and heat generation under radiofrequency fields for oncological hyperthermia and the thawing of vitrified tissues. In-house instrumental developments are also described, such as a portable RF applicator, an inductive system for measuring magnetic cycles at radiofrequency, and a prototype magnetic permeability tomography device. This overview demonstrates the direct relationship between synthesis parameters, the resulting magnetic properties, and the achieved functionality. It highlights the potential of magnetic nanostructures as versatile platforms for addressing current challenges in technology, healthcare, and the environment.
