This paper reviews the main contributions of ethnographics studies conducted in psychiatric hospitals. First, we review classic ethnographies in mental hospitals. Then we present studies that problematize the deinstitutionalisation process. Studies focusing on treatment approaches and professional world are also analysed. Third, we review some ethographic studies in Latin America, grouped in thematic lines and, finally, we present a conceptual discussion of contemporary institutional models and professionals practices. The paper presents the main socio-anthropological contributions from the ethnographic studies reviewed, and disccuses methodological and ethical issues that challenge the development of this kind of research.
