Chesterton, el filósofo de la calle Fleet

Abstract

El presente trabajo tiene por objeto llamar la atención sobre la relevancia metafísica de una figura literaria de la época eduardiana, Gilbert K. Chesterton. El estudio se divide en tres partes: en la primera, se coloca a dicha figura en su contexto histórico, evocando la naturaleza de su labor de escritor a partir de su principal oficio, el periodismo. Una vez reconocida la variedad de rasgos de su obra, en la segunda parte, el argumento se focaliza en la necesidad de destacar la importancia que Chesterton concede al rol de la razón teórica; en relación a ello, Chesterton va a sostener que el pragmatismo es poco práctico, y que lo que necesita el mundo moderno, para resolver susproblemas, es del pensamiento metafísico. En tercer y último lugar, se indaga en torno a la existencia y calidad de inteligencia metafísica cultivada en la misma obra chestertoniana, poniendo a prueba, así, la verosimilitud de su defensa de la filosofía. Para ello se escoge su libro O rthodoxy , en cuyo examen se registra una profunda exposición de la metafísica modal, esto es, de la necesidad condicional. De este modo, a partir de la obra de Chesterton, un periodista sin educación universitaria, es posible observar que el genuino sentido común es aquel capaz de cristalizar en el cultivo de la metafísica.

The present study aims for attract attention on the metaphysical meaning of the works by Gilbert K. Chesterton, a literary figure of the Edwardian era. This research is divided into three parts: first, the writer is placed within his historical context, along with the nature of his work of journalist. After recognizing the varieties of Chesterton’s work, in the second part, the argument focuses on the importance that Chesterton gives to the role of theoretical reason; in relation to this, he claims that Pragmatism is not practical enough, and what the modern world needs is metaphysical thought in order to solve its problems. Thirdly, the paper looks for the existence and quality of Metaphysics within the same Chesterton’s work. For this, we pick up Orthodoxy, and in testing it we find a profound teaching about modal metaphysics, that is, about conditional necessity. Thus, from the work of Chesterton, a journalist without university education, it is possible to observe that a genuine common sense is that which is able to bear fruit of metaphysical thought.
