The aim of this paper is to analyse, on the one hand, the principal aspects of the psychological critique of the mimetic-pleasant poetry in RepublicX, and on the other hand to trace the antecedents of this critique that can already be seen in a dialogue of transition like Gorgias, especially in the context of the parallels that Plato establishes there between the traditional poetry and the flattery rhetoric practised by sophists and orators of that time.
