This paper presents the results obtained from the intervention of a bulk-curing barn used for curing 8 tons of Virginia tobacco in Vaqueros, Salta, aimed at reducing energy consumption by incorporating solar energy and improving the thermal efficiency of the process. The intervention included installing an air preheating system on the barn roof, consisting of solar collectors and heat recovery from the burner’s exhaust. Between 2022 and 2024, tests were conducted on the modified barn both in unloaded conditions and during tobacco leaf curing. The results show a gas consumption reduction of approximately 40% for a complete curing cycle with the incorporation of the proposed preheating system. Considering the necessary investment costs and gas savings for the entire curing season, the investment payback period is around 2.8 seasons, based on international gas rates. These results demonstrate the technical and financial feasibility of the proposed system in the context of unsubsidized tariffs.
