During the last military dictatorship in Argentina, more than seven hundred venues were used (systematically or occasionally) as clandestine detention centers or places for illegal reclusion. During Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner administrations, one hundred thirty four of those venues were marked by the State as Sites of Memory. This paper aims to describe and analyze this process, by focusing on the creation of a public agency specifically in charge of the marking, with its own actors and logics of intervention. In doing so we intend to contribute to the understanding of the nature of this “memory public policy” in the context of an increasing porosity between state and social local actors. This issue is approached from an interdisciplinary perspective that brings together elements from qualitative research on public policies and memory studies, hoping to enrich our comprehension of the specificities implied in the action of the state as an agent of memory.
