In history, the archive is a methodological tool that recovers the past but also interprets it. Its eclectic and diverse nature requires an order of meaning in which each element is read in relation to the whole. In the case of literature and personal collections, an archive contains materials that writers gather for their work: notes, newspaper clippings, photos, and drafts of texts. Seemingly anarchic, these eclectic documents make sense only through the order that writing imposes on them. This impulse to collect, to preserve for a possible future text, could remain a mere repository of material. However, Fina Warschaver constructs a literary work that adopts the form of the archive itself. Through a fragmentary logic that challenges the linearity of writing, she writes the anti-novel of Argentine history in which she demystifies the construction of national myths, proposing an alternative view on the authority of the archive and of national history. This video essay shows the tension between archive and work, the ongoing search for a form through which writing can imitate the excessive yet uncertain nature of its archive.
