Throughout history, all societies have defined the people they consider elderly. And this led to different approaches and theories to be interested in understanding and explaining the aging process of their populations, as well as the interpretation and management by States. Regarding the Argentine case, we already find from the Census of 1869 a first approximation and State interest in these subjects. Sustained over time, how old age and the elderly were defined would shape how to represent and manage it. From a sociological approach, this article reviews different aging theories, how the State approached these issues, the social representations, and how they give content to analyze the aging process. Finally, in the context of increasing population aging, the article reflects on the impact and usefulness of these representations, the policies carried out, and the expected or not expected results that these policies may have.
