The aim of this paper is to examine the role that the foundation, possession and control of local churches played in the emergency and consolidation of what historiography has recently called “rural elites” in 9th and 10th centuries Castile. A discussion will be arised, through the analysis of the documentation gathered in the cartularies of three important monasteries of the region –San Pedro de Cardeña, San Pedro de Arlanza and San Cosme y San Damian de Covarrubias– about those theories that circumscribe the fundamentals of the social differences within the peasant society exclusively to the patrimonial sphere and it will be offered a more complex explanation for the origin of those asymmetries. In that sense, it is proposed that the owners and the priests in charge of these local churches used to reach a distinguished status due to the development of a profuse wealth accumulation, the performance of a variety of functions that were necessary for their communities and the setting up of relationships with the seigniorial powers in expansion.
