This article examines some threads of the cultural conjuncture in Buenos Aires (Argentina) between 1976 and 1989 with the aim of tracing the imaginary tissue (composed of prediscursive, affective and phantasmatic elements) that underlies the process of neoliberalization of urban experience and public space. It takes into account the urban metamorphosis driven by the last dictatorship (1976-1983) and the way in which this transformation was processed in the so-called post-dictatorship. From a theoretical-methodological communicational approach, conjectures derive from the dialogue with recent works and from a set of images obtained in an extensive archival work. After a series of theoretical clarifications on the concepts of imaginary, landscape, phantasm and public space, some elements of the imaginary scene that configures the “city of the dictatorship” are analyzed. The post-dictatorial turn of urban culture is then addressed from three axes: the landscaping of the city of the dictatorship, the literalization of public space and the identity-based development of the city. This work seeks to contribute both to the knowledge of socio-urban processes for the period 1976-1989 and to the understanding of traits of ideological neoliberalization of public space, not limited to the urban/municipal scale.
