The purpose of this paper is to analyze the “Pueblos Auténticos” program in context of the Argentine tourism policy and in relation to country-branding strategies. Its aim is to identify localities whose particularities can be developed as “potential” values in the tourism market, based on the exploitation of cultural, historical and heritage identity. From a socio-semiotic perspective and with contributions from ideological criticism (Žižek, 2003), we analyze a corpus of documents and advertisements belonging to the program, to identify the tension between the authentic and the global, in environments of production of spaces and practices that are touristified/touristifiable from the state perspective. There, we evidence the role of the equivalence forms and guarantees required by tourism as a market that produces unified experiences.
