Aquatic ecology studies the interactions between organisms that live in water and their environment and provides tools that can be used in the forensic field, providing scientifically rigorous evidence to judicial investigations. Forensic aquatic ecology, a new discipline of forensic biology, is the study of the aquatic environment and its relationship with a suspected criminal act, through the analysis of biological evidence collected. The objective of this article is to present some examples of the possible areas of action of forensic aquatic ecology, which involve: 1) Case-works linked to possible crimes or whereabouts investigation and 2) Case-works linked to possible environmental crimes. Forensic aquatic ecology involves not only the scientific determination of the relationship between evidence obtained from the environment and the case in question but also the standardization and validation of forensic protocols following legal admissibility criteria, which requires adequate coordination between ecologists, forensic scientist, and actors. of the judicial system.
