Recognizing that in Argentina the study of political exile encompasses diverse disciplinary and historiographical frameworks, but bearing in mind that the expansion and institutionalization of this field of study has developed synchronously—though not always concurrently—with the shaping of so-called Recent History, this article aims to revisit its current agenda of themes and issues, focusing on five key ideas. Namely: the magnitude of expatriation, the repressive dimension of exile, the characteristics of the national political communities of exile, the chronology of the anti-dictatorship struggles abroad and the transformations of the collective action frameworks of the Argentine left. This study is based on the hypothesis that these topics reflect both the most productive critical dialogues between exile studies and the history of the recent past, as well as some of the defining characteristics of Argentine exile historiography in the context of other historiographies dedicated to elucidating contemporary regional processes of political emigration.
