Zeolite A was synthesized from fly ash and a spent FCC catalyst. Prior to the synthesis, an alkaline fusion pretreatment was carried out to improve the conversion of industrial wastes into zeolite A. The products of the synthesis were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Both types of solids rich in zeolite A were used for the removal of Cd+2 from aqueous solutions. The results indicated that for high initial cation concentrations in the solution, zeolite A obtained from fly ash presented higher removal efficiency. In both solids, the increase of the pH observed during the ion exchange procedure favoured the precipitation of the cadmium present in solution. This fact improved cation removal capacity, obtaining values lower than the limits allowed by the current provincial legislation.
