In this paper we first analyze the background of the discussion of which metrics best represent the brightness perception of the illuminated space, as well as its limitations and the challenges that this search presents. A pilot experiment was conducted in a real illuminated space in order to compare the existing metrics and their relationship with the subjective response of the observers. Horizontal illuminance and luminance were measured and, MRSE-Mean Room Surface Exitance- was calculated. The luminous flux data and the intensity distribution type were provided by the manufacturer. This first pilot experiment yields some interesting results: MRSE, luminance and luminous flux seem to be good candidates to represent the perception of the illuminated space, besides the type of distribution and to a much lesser degree the color temperature are significant variables. The horizontal illuminance seems to be not represent the perceptual response of the luminous space. These results helped to understand the need to investigate new metrics and procedures that allow designers to project and evaluate illuminated spaces in order to achieve a visually well-qualified space.
