An anatomical research of the vegetative organs belonging to six species of Mentha: M. citrata Ehrh., M. pulegium L., M. spicata L., M. x rotundifolia (L.) Hudson, M. x piperita L., M. arvensis L., has been carried out in order to 1) contribute to the knowledge of the genus, 2) evaluate the differential characters and, 3) provide tools to identify the species when quality controls are required. The leaf and stem structure of each species is comparatively analyzed, with special reference to the epidermis. A non glandular and glandular trichomes classification is proposed, and a novel type of trichome for the genus is described (glandular trichome with unicellular and stipitate head). The histological diagnostic characters are summarized in a table and a key with the objective to facilitate the quality control. Illustrations and photographs taken with optical and scanning electronic microscope are included.
