This article analyzes the section devoted to the Guarayu Indians (Guaraní-speaking) in the baptismal register of the Jesuit mission of San José de Mojos (1714-1724). This is the earliest roster of its kind found to date. First, we present the history of the Guarayu’s contact with the missionaries of the Society of Jesus and examine the possible causes that led this group to settle in locations so distant from their original territory. We then focus on the information provided by the baptismal book regarding their social organization. Finally, we examine the Guarayu anthroponyms recorded in the register, establishing a typological classification based on semantic inquiries and interpretations.
